Do You Need to Find a Gym?
While most people look to join MMA training centers or gyms to become well-grounded in one of the most dangerous combat sports, many people decide that they would prefer to learn MMA at home, at least in the beginning.
This could sometimes be due to certain factors such as time constraint, distance, income (MMA classes aren’t cheap), or just the desire to learn within the comfort of their own home.
Whatever the case may be, how well you perform in MMA doesn’t always have to do with where you learn.
What really matters is how effective your technique and training methods are and your level of commitment to the sport.
Now that you’ve decided that you’re ready to start your journey and learn MMA at home, let’s get into precisely what it takes to start developing your skills and become proficient in your craft.
Get An Indoor Space
Just like in a gym or MMA training center, you will need enough space for training. You are creating your MMA world and, therefore, you probably shouldn’t be thinking your bedroom will be big enough to handle this unless of course, your room is as large as an MMA gym.
Ensure that the space is well ventilated and has plenty of lighting.
Things like a garage, backyard, your living room (as long as it’s big enough), or even a spare room in your house will certainly do.
Ensure Your Safety
Make sure that before you start jumping into your training (I know you can’t wait!), keep in mind that safety always comes first before anything else.
Ensure that your training space is safe enough and that the floors are not slippery to prevent accidental falls.
You won’t mind doing a lot of cleaning especially if it is an old abandoned room just to get rid of those objects waiting to cause a mishap, it’s definitely worth it if it means having a solid space to start your training in.
Buying essential training equipment should be the next thing that comes to mind.
If you want to train like an MMA fighter, then you’ve got to have the right gear.
Here’s my recommended list of gear for your MMA training:
- Boxing Gloves (for heavy bag work, mitt work and sparring)

Find A Coach
Next, you want to find an experienced and qualified teacher who is going to bring the best out of you.
Here’s the primary benefit: although it is more expensive than enrolling in MMA classes (and rightly so), you have the privilege of learning faster since your coach’s time and attention is dedicated solely to you and you alone.
In an MMA class, however, you can easily get lost in the sea of other fighters.
